The Montero is Mitsubishi’s most expensive vehicle sold here and is in fact the latest generation Pajero. Powered by a 3200cc diesel, the Montero makes good grunt and torque. With the gearing slightly off, it translates into poor power delivery at the bottom end where the SUV tends to bog down and loses steam. Power delivery towards the top is more seamless, making it a good highway cruiser. The monocoque structure should make it more car-like to handle, but it isn’t so, with the ride slightly thrashy in the bargain. What the Montero offers is a lot of kid for the money you spend, something SUVs a rung higher struggle to offer. Recently, Mitsubishi have started offering an automatic variant that seems to work better with the diesel engine without much drop in fuel efficiency. Off-roading is in its genes and it does that decently, but gets marred once again by the gearbox. A proper all-weather SUV if you are not asking much from it.
